Sue Moxon, my partner in crime the amazingly talented musician for ‘She Melts’ wrote this post about her take on developing the show:
Composing the music for She Melts has been an exciting and challenging task. From the very first reading of the script I was drawn into the fairy-tale nature contained within the story and I wanted to compose music that would reflect this.
The challenge of creating live music to support such a visual story was in finding the balance between improvised sections and more fully composed parts so I set out to create a score based a few simple themes that weave their way through the story.
As a solo musician on stage I was very aware of how important it was that the music enhance what Cindy was doing. I made the decision fairly early on to play everything live without pre-recorded loops or computer assisted pre-programming. This has been one of the most interesting aspects of composing the music for She Melts because in one sense it limits how much can be played at any point in the show but in another way it opens up a great deal of space and allows for silence to also be part of the musical landscape.
